Life in Sendai is committed to fostering community integration through cultural exchange by providing international students and residents with a platform for meaningful interaction. Through local events, a dedicated Discord server and an accessible website, it is our goal to create opportunities for engagement, language development, and professional growth.
Vision:
We aim to bridge cultural and language barriers by conducting both in-person and online platforms to facilitate discussions, plan events and language exchanges, and share up-to-date information and resources. Our in-person initiatives include supporting international residents to develop essential Japanese language and professional skills for the restaurant and hospitality industry through events offered through SEEK (Sendai Experimental Kitchen). By expanding our platform to a website, both the Japanese and international residents have broader access to communicate with each other and exchange valuable information and services.
Concept:
As a cultural and culinary bridge, Life in Sendai (LiS) through SEEK (Sendai Experimental Kitchen) will organize potlucks, food-related events, and workshops where international students and residents can prepare and share dishes from their home countries with Japanese residents. These gatherings will not only promote cultural exchange but also serve as a practical environment for the international community to improve their Japanese communication skills, particularly in hospitality and casual settings. Japanese participants will have the opportunity to experience authentic global cuisines and connect with people from diverse backgrounds. To encourage deeper engagement, both international and Japanese residents will be invited to practice speaking in their second or third languages. Through these events, we aim to expand community engagement via a web platform for easier and accessible sharing of information.
Objectives for 2025:
- Create both an in-person and online community hub for engagement and mutual support.
- Foster cultural and language exchange through events and discussions.
- Offer training programs to help international students develop Japanese language skills for restaurant and hospitality jobs.
